Review of Middle Men (2009) by Brett B — 28 May 2011
Middle Men is an interesting but flawed look at how a little piece of software changed the internet porn business forever. The film is a rather odd blend of comedy and drama and one of the faults is that the movie never seems to strike a balance between the two, leaving the drama stuff to bog down the pacing of the film.
The comedic moments work better thanks in part to outstanding performances from Luke Wilson, Giovanni Ribisi, Gabriel Macht and a few other notable stars. Middle Men's plot is quite compelling but it bites off more than it can chew and too many characters/subplots cause the movie to feel disjointed and go off course.
It is a shame because the basic premise is intriguing and the script itself is well written with good character development for the most part. Overall, Middle Men is a missed opportunity but that is not to say it is a bad movie.
The performances are excellent and the story does contain more than enough strong elements to keep your attention as it unfolds.
