Review of Micmacs (2009) by Stuart B — 05 Mar 2010
A great little inventive yarn about Bazil and how he gets his own back on the arms trade with the help of The Intrigues of the Tyre Yard. The main drawback, for non French speakers, is that the extensive use of French slang loses something in the subtitled translation and the film suffers as a result (eg in one scene, a character who has been in prison, Placard [itself a joke - it means cupboard] refers to having survived the 'widowmaker', which is merely translated on the subs as guillotine.
The patois is lost and an English vernacular wasn't used).
