Review of Micmacs (2009) by Dave J — 06 Apr 2010
Micmacs is a beautifully crafted, visually arresting comedy which takes some serious swipes at weapons manufacturers and corporate greed. When one man's life falls apart in the aftermath of a stray bullet - we follow his journey and induction into a family of odd but kindly characters eager to help him get even.
The strange characters may not be everybody's cup of tea - and the notion of French with English subtitles may be enough to turn people off straight away. It would be a shame to miss out on Micmacs for those reasons.
One of the most prominent aspects of the film are the striking visuals - it helps that the humour is mostly visual or physical in nature - meaning not too much of your attention needs to be drawn from the flair to read the words.
That said - the script is littered with plenty of funny lines, good performances and an imaginative, inventive story. Give Micmacs a chance and enjoy this unusual but rewarding film.
