Review of Micmacs (2009) by Adam E — 22 Jun 2010
Some things just can't be whimsical. Micmacs is a fine example of that. Starting off promisingly as a silent-movie style comedy, Jean Pierre Jeunet's film soon focuses on the "whimsical" world of terrorists and arms dealers.
..althewhile keeping its light, fluffy and somewhat patronizing tone. Main problem with Micmacs is that it's just not funny. This is partly due to the awkward subject matter but also the script which feels the need to balance serious issues with childish, 5 year old style humour.
A City of Lost Children-style, Caro infused, darkly surreal outing would have been appropriate but as it stands, Micmacs just doesn't work. It's like sticking Amélie Poulain in a film about organs trafficking.
Sacrebleu! Anyway, on the plus side, the film does look good and has its moments, just don't expect to be enlightened in any way or laugh your head off.
