Jean-Pierre Jeunet is one of the most creative and inventive directors working today. I loved AMELIE but this film is a mess from start to finish. AMELIE had a main character that was likable, charming and one I could relate to.

It explored universal themes and ideas. It just had that special charm and wit because of it's simplicity. MICMACS lacks all of this. Jeunet explores more complex themes and he tries to do it again in that same style and manner but it just doesn't work.

His ideas are all over the place. The comedy is not very funny. The characters are odd and quirky, which is fine but they aren't very interesting. The performances are fine. The way the story unfolded just didn't work for me, nothing seemed to hold my interest.

It seemed like Jeunet just put together a bunch of odd characters and set pieces and forgot that his character's also needed some soul. Why should we care for our main character Bazil? Why is his mission important? The character motivations should have been explored more deeply.

Also, I understand he is trying to highlight the evil ways of the weapons industry but by not giving the subject more meat, I felt like the director wasn't exploring it seriously. MICMACS has some things going for it but a little more focus and attention would have helped the film greatly.

Overall, I felt like the film was a missed opportunity. I couldn't wait till the film ended! Now THAT'S bad.
