Review of Michael Collins (1996) by Adam D — 06 Mar 2010
This was a really good movie that needed to be made. The story of the Irish's fight for independence and national stability is one that began well before Michael Collins was even born and continued well after Michael Collins' death and almost spewed over into the 21st century as Ireland has continued to quell off attacks from the Irish Republican Army [a group deemed to be "terrorists" by some- patriots by others- one man's "terrorist" is another man's "patriot"- I guess it all depends on whose side you're on] who Michael Collins helped to train in the early 20th century and then settled for Ireland to be a free-state under the authority of then British empire and was then considered a traitor to the IRA and killed by them soon after Collins negotiated a peace treaty with Britain.
I was suprised that I had not heard of it sooner. It was released in 1996. All main characters do a very good job in this movie, especially the title character, played by Liam Neeson [Schindler's List, the voice of Aslan in The Chronicles of Narnia]. The cast is basically a group of unknowns except for Julia Roberts. She does well in the movie, even if she can't speak in an Irish accent.
