Review of Michael Collins (1996) by Dave R — 28 Jun 2010
Liam Neeson is a towering leader of men as The Big Fella, an example of inspired casting. The Irish revolution is fertile ground for cinema and the action and intrigue is kept crisp and almost never overly expository.
The biggest weakness of the film is the love story that, history or no history, feels tacked on at the last minute. Julia Roberts feels out of place as if she was meant to be a guest star cameo rather than a supporting role.
If you can get past the uninspired love story it really succeeds as a film showing the charm and terror of one of history's great revolutionaries.
