Review of Michael Collins (1996) by Ryan G — 18 Jun 2011
Michael Collins is a film with a breathtaking score and beautiful cinematography along with a very good performance from Liam Neeson, however it is far from great. It seems like the film did not know what tone it wanted to take it goes from war epic to secret agent to romance to drama I felt like I was watching a bunch of video clips from different movies at times.
While Liam Neeson and Alan Rickman are good, Julia Roberts is absolutely dreadful and every scene she has with Liam drags him down and makes the movie weaker, she was completely wrong for the role especially since she is really not that good of an actress working with a brilliant one such as Liam Neeson.
The ending is very strange it ends with Kitty but the movie really had nothing to do with Kitty infact with no offense to her I think they could have made this movie better without including her. Michael Collins could have been so much better but the writing seems a bit sloppy, most of the performances are either mediocre or dreadful and it is a bit confusing at times as far as what kind of movie it is.
