Review of Michael Collins (1996) by Emma R — 01 Jun 2008
What your politics are probably influences your opinion on this. If you are Irish, you see a protrait of a national hero. If you are English, you see a sympathy piece on a terrorist. Since I am neither, I can take the film on its merits.
Liam Neeson does do an fantasic job as Collins, especially showing how tenacious the man can be. But if you aren't familar with Irish history and troubles with England, you might be lost here. The performances around Neeson are up to par, except Julia Roberts.
Why is she even in this movie? This was sold to American audiences as an Irish Braveheart, and while it isn't that, it is a solid if flawed bio pic.
