Review of Michael Clayton (2007) by Connor _ — 02 Jan 2011
I really appreciated Michael Clayton a whole lot more on second viewing. I remember the first time I watched it I appreciated it for its stunning performances (Clooney yes, but more so TIlda Swinton), wonderful editing and simple, powerful photography.
But I couldn't understand it's Oscar nomination for best screenplay - it all seemed rather too straightforward to me. Now, in hindsight, I can see that actually that this is a virtue (especially given some of the dreck Hollywood has crapped out and labelled 'thrillers' in the past couple of years), and the script is actually peppered with memorable dialogues.
The story is also, given recent history, not unrealistic, and there are some scenes (the 'hit', the confrontation between Michael and Karen) that are extremely powerful. Highly recommended.
