Review of Michael Clayton (2007) by Trey D — 07 Oct 2010
The idea of taking a story about one man's struggles with family set against the backdrop of a gripping Grisham-esque legal thriller is something I find very interesting. At first, the film seems like a straightforward legal conspiracy thriller, but what sets this apart is the exploration of one character, and taking the time to add depth and dimension to him and try to put you in a position to understand why he makes the decisions he makes.
There's a reason the movie's title is the name of its protagonist. This is a character study disguised as corporate espionage. Clooney nails all the subtleties to his character, ranging from cool and collected to emotionally vulnerable.
By exploring his past, and the complex relationships with all the members of his family, we see Michael Clayton as a human being, instead of just a character.
