Review of Miami Vice (2006) by Rick R — 11 May 2009
Miami Vice (2006).
Based on Michael Mann's stylish 1980s TV series. This time Colin Farrell plays a less red-necked Sonny Crockett and Jamie Foxx plays Ricardo Tubbs, two undercover Miami vice cops who get sent out on an FBI assignment to get a drugs and guns operation in South America with some skinheads here in the U.S.
Dreamy-eyed Sonny meets up and falls in love with a Cuban of Chinese decent, Isabella (Li Gong) who is a money launderer and assistant to a drug kingpin. Crockett and Tubbs are way over their heads on this, with someone in the Inter-Agency Task Force, Police, or FBI spying for the drug cartel, and the people they love are in jeopardy.
Michael Mann's direction shows off these exotic locals beautifully. Everything is slow moving and moody. I've heard many negative comments that it wasn't like Collateral or Heat, but Miami Vice was never meant to be that type of movie. We don't get too much into Crockett and Tubbs, because frankly, if you're a fan of the series you already know all there is to know about them anyway. Miami Vice was meant to be all style and not so much substance.
