Surely one of the misunderstood films in recent memory. having a distinctive past to deal with, not to mention a considerable raft of expectations and presumptions this film was destined to disappoint, confuse and confound most interested parties. those hoping for a nostalgia fix and/or irony got nothing. those hoping for a straightforward action flick got complexity and a subtle obtuse character study; and those hoping for a linear thriller plot got an elegiac mood composition.

It is mann's curse to be perpetually associated with the macho action genre when his interests lie somewhere more introspective and cerebral. instead of thinking about the blockbuster action arena this was pushed into almost by default, viewers are better served going into this film thinking wong kar wai's 'in the mood for love/2046' (or did you think gong li was here by accident) and the films of jean-pierre melville.

In miami vice, mann approaches a pure cinema where the substance of the thing is thoroughly enmeshed in the projected light of the images. only those looking for clay will find nothing here.
