"MFKZ" is one of the funniest, action-packed, and most high-octane films of this year. Yes, I said that right. Not just for animated films, but a film in general. Now it's not a perfect movie that will win any Oscars so don't let me overhype it TOO BAD, but it's an animated film I can see becoming a classic and have aired reruns on Toonami.

The animation is stunning; very detailed, yet simple, with beautiful backdrops, creative character designs, and able to sustain fast frames of gruesome and intense action seamlessly. I'd recommend this film just on a technical level.

But it pushes even further with its extremely likable protagonists and its ruthless villains in what is best described, an anime portrayal of the ghetto. But without spoilers, the plot quickly becomes much more than that with a dark, sci-fi conspiracy going on that ties into our main character.

Because of this, the story FULLY embraces a lot of the silly, downright mind-bendy events that happen in this film. While the film acknowledges it's silly, it doesn't get lost in the silliest for too long and also stays focused on our heroes trying to stay alive as they uncover the truth.

Did I mention this film is downright hilarious? I and my theater were laughing constantly with the characters banter and some of the crazy things that happened in this movie. The humor reminds me of the dark and sudden humor from movies like the first Machete or Pulp Fiction if you're looking for a comparison.

It also helps break up or even enhance the constant action scenes that are well done, but if taken more seriously, might have gotten repetitive. As for why this isn't a 10 out of 10, while the plot is enjoyable, it's not perfect.

The twist reveal was neat but was explained through a rushed and piled exposition scene and there's a subplot following some wrestler characters whose only purpose in the film was to solve some writers block for the third act.

That said, this movie picks apart other subplots of its own and lets you know you'll need a little sense of disbelief going in. But since it's an animated film following an all black being, a talking cat with braces, and a talking skull with his head on fire (who may be related to ghost rider now that I think about it), if you do have interest in seeing this, then you probably won't need to suspend it too much more.
