Review of Metroland (1997) by Jes K — 03 Mar 2008
One word: SEXY. The cinematography is great in the sense that it feels true to the era it supposedly occured in. This film is comprised of fantasies + flashbacks by a young man to his pre-marital days and the reality of living in the "world" he once despised.
Christian Bale tries to find happiness with his beautiful, painfully dry + witty English wife Marion played by Emily Watson. We are taken back to where they were, before marriage, before suburbia. Graphic depictions of sexuality as the young Brit Bale crosses the Channel to live his Parisian dream as a photographer during the late Sixties.
He struggles with thoughts of what could have been + what he has. Metroland is a different kind of movie, but worth the watch if you are a Bale fan. I had no idea what I was in for the first time I watched this! For anyone who is in love with or dreams of the Parisian way of living, this is a great film.
The music is wonderful! This movie is part of my collection...and for reasons I already explained, n'est-ce pas?
