Review of Metro Manila (2013) by Eric H — 11 May 2015
I realized this was an excellent film 40 minutes into it. It resonates with the tragedy of being poor, really poor - a displaced husband and wife having no money for food while trapped amidst abject poverty with cruel scammers all around them.
This is something very few, if any Americans can relate t. Americans waste enough food in a month to feed the poor of Manila for a year. And that's exactly why everyone in America should watch it if for nothing else to appreciate what they have and lament at how much they take for granted.
As this is going on. the sheer terror of desperation he embodies to save his family is palpable and the thrill of horror sets when you realize his only option. Great acting, directing, cinematography, and pretty original story.
In its own way, it is a masterpiece of harsh reality. Stick with it to the end. If you like this type of dark noir heists see "The Take". Good job to all who created and made this film. Highly recommended.
