Review of Metallica: Through the Never (2013) by Brent F — 26 Sep 2013
Soundtrack: The soundtrack was awesome. If you're a Metallica fan or fan metal, you'll likely enjoy much of the setlist. We got to hear mostly their older catalogue, but there were a couple from Reload and one from Death Magnetic on there. While I suspect there was some post-production editing and overdubs (especially with Lars' double bass), the music was tight and uniform. And while it is not as loud as a Metallica concert, watching it in IMAX certainly gave it the feel of a Metallica concert: loud.
Cinematography: Absolutely superb. It is perhaps what I enjoyed most from the film. The director did a fantastic job of getting some great shots. It really felt like I was on stage with the band. Regarding the narrative, there were some great visuals and shots.
Stage: the stage was unbelievable! Lots of pyrotechnics, visuals, lasers, lights, and smoke. We get to see "Doris" (Lady Justice) constructed and toppled, crosses rise from the stage, the electric chair being energized by Tesla Coils, and more. Unfortunately, we did not see the infamous "Metal Up Your Ass" toilet featured at the show.
Narrative: I've heard a lot of negative reviews about the plot, but I actually enjoyed it. It seemed a little forced (as if they looked for an excuse to show a guy beating people up while on fire, car accidents, explosions, and demolitions. But it fit the music very well. It helps to keep in mind the protagonist's name is "Trip". He takes a pill before beginning his journey and so I take it everything which occurs is a hallucination.
Acting: Deehan did a great job acting. The band themselves, not so much. How the film introduces the band is kind of cheesy as well and I thought they could've portrayed them a little better.
Overall, I give it five stars. My only complaints were the shortening of songs and maybe the confusing ending. I am guessing it has something to do with Cliff Burton, their late bassist. Today, the actual release of the movie, is the anniversary of his passing. So given the release date and the song they play during the closing credits, that's what I am guessing.
