Review of Metallica: Through the Never (2013) by David S — 20 Oct 2013
Finally got to see this in 3D at my local theater and am glad I did. The film is a mix of a concert movie of Metallica playing for it's die hard fans and also an adventure starring a silent protagonist roadie played by Dane DeHaan.
DeHaan is sent to retrieve an important package that is locked inside a broke down truck somewhere in the city. As the concert rages inside the arena, outside the city is under siege by rioters and a horse-back marauder with a sledgehammer intent on clobbering our hero into mush.
The action is well paced and intertwined throughout the concert footage, and the sweeping camera movements both in and out of the arena make excellent use of the 3D without overdoing it. While not all of Metallica's vast library can fit within the trim 90-minute run time of the film, the band does a good job of representing each of the many decades they have been around, playing such favorites as: For Whom The Bell Tolls, Enter Sandman, Creeping Death, One, Ride the Lightning, Battery, Master of Puppets, .
..And Justice For All, Fuel, Cyanide and even Hit The Lights! The final credits play over, what else, Orion. Definitely a must for any Metallica fan.
