Review of Metallica: Through the Never (2013) by Daniel G — 27 Jan 2014
As expected of a concert movie, there isn't much in the way of a plot, although it does try to tell a story with its sequences that cut away from the concert footage and instead show a teenaged roadie fighting his way through a massive city-wide riot.
Much of the meaning of these scenes is left up for interpretation, much like a very long music video; also like a music video; the imagery is absolutely stunning. Not only does the concert footage look awesome, but the cutaway scenes are absolutely gorgeous in their own gritty, macabre way.
Of course, the music is nothing short of fantastic, and is the reason you're watching this film in the first place. It brings back memories of being fortunate to see the concert when they filmed their coverage live.
My only complaint is that it could have stood to be a little longer; I understand they couldn't put the whole three-hour set into the movie, but it would've been nice to see a couple more songs.
Despite being over a little too soon; this film is an amazing experience, and a must-see for any fan of Metallica.
