Review of Metallica: Through the Never (2013) by Matt B — 27 Sep 2013
Metallica: Through the Never is as close to the concert experience as one can get without getting sweat, beer, and elbows tossed at you from the mosh pit. The IMAX sound was incredible and did a great job replicating the live sound.
I attended this concert live in Vancouver and can honestly say they didn't miss a beat sound wise. The narrative part of the film is more abstract and will most likely leave the casual viewer wanting a little more but this is a concert film first and foremost and fans of the band will find themselves right at home with iconic images throughout the bands 30 year career up on stage and exploding(literally) on the big screen! The cinematography and 3d really showed what the technology can due to help one immerse themselves in what is being played on screen.
The 3d focuses more on depth rather than having things come at you which helps director Nimrod Antel accomplish his goals of putting you in the Arena rather than watch it. Fan(hardcore and casual) will love it and viewers will appreciate the beautiful shots, 3d, and artistic direction which deprecates from other basic concert films and makes up for the shortcomings the narrative may have.
