Review of Mesrine: Public Enemy #1 (2008) by Chris M — 17 Sep 2010
Having been a very angry young man in Part 1, Vincent Cassel truly inhabits Jacques Mesrine as he develops a larger and larger paunch and endless wardrobe of disguises in Part 2.
No less brutal than the first part, this film at least addresses some of the contradictions in Mesrine's own view of himself. He writes his own story that makes him out to be a ruthless psychopath who claims to be attacking The System.
But in reality, he's just in it for the money. He claims to be a revolutionary, but in fact he doesn't know anything about it. He talks a good game, but actually is a better chef than a political campaigner (as his stomach testifies)...
