Review of Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983) by David D — 07 Jun 2007
This one is a bit of a slow burn, but very gratifying if you stick with it. David Bowie gives an ... interesting performance, as does Ryuichi Sakamoto, Bowie's Japanese Doppleganger, who also wrote the score.
But it's the titular character, played by Tom Conti, and Beat Takeshi who carry the film - Takeshi, with the last line of the film, gives a gut-punch of devastating bleakness that will linger with you for days.
