Review of Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983) by Eric R — 05 Dec 2010
Nagisa Oshima's film is an interesting piece, and I really wanted to enjoy it, but by the end, I felt like ti just tried to say too much. The film follows a group of britsh soldiers whom are in a Japanese prison.
the film establishes the significant culture differences that existed between the two cultures towards the end of the war, and there are segments and are very well constructed. The visual design is fantastic and their are some great scenes through out the film but I think Oshima may have wanted to say TOO much, leading to a film that is kinda convulted in the amount of themes and statements.
A flawed work that contains certain scenes that I will not forget. A lesser Oshima, but probably still worth watching just for a few beautifully constructed and executed scenes.
