Review of Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983) by James-Masaki R — 05 Jan 2011
Having David Bowie, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Beat Takeshi in the same movie sounds like a dream come true. Nagisa Oshima presents a film about war, but not about the bloody conflict, but the understanding and misunderstanding between men in war.
In addition, the innovative electronic score by Sakamoto, still a classic. If you're expecting all-out violence in war, then you'll be sadly disappointed. But if you're looking for a war movie that is not about the politics and reasons of war, but a so called 'human drama' in the terms of men, (I don't recall any women in the movie.
.. oh wait, maybe in Bowie's flashback) here's the film for you.
