Review of Mermaids (1990) by Kelly S — 10 May 2009
Mermaids is the story of a turbulent relationship between a daughter and an eccentric, flamboyant mom. Rachel Flax's (Cher) is the mom who cannot handle responsibility and have moved 18 times from one town to another to avoid commitment.
Her daughter Charlotte (Winona Ryder), is getting tired of it and without guidance is confused between her obsession to become a nun (though she is Jewish), and her lusts to Joe, a caretaker to the convent.
A near tragic accident that happened to younger daughter Kate, brought them together to a happy ending. It is funny and at times has some seriousness on the side. I couldn't put together why the movie is titled Mermaids, is it that Kate is a swimmer or that Rachel wears that mermaid outfit to a party or that the women Flax family roams around just like mermaids do.
Overall, it is nice and it is something that every daughter can relate to with their mom, especially on Mother's day.
