Review of Mercury Rising (1998) by Cal ( — 19 Oct 2007
When first released, 'Mercury Rising' was heavily panned by critics, and to this day I have no idea why. This action/thriller is a really impressive, fast-paced film that I found highly enjoyable.
Bruce Willis is once again the typical (awesome) action hero, much like his classic John McClane. A 9-year-old autistic child named Simon (Hughes) innocently cracks a top secret "unbreakable" government code designed by the NSA, and as a matter of national security, Lt.
Col. Nicholas Kudrow (Baldwin) orders the child's immediate murder. FBI agent Art Jeffries (Willis) is assigned to protect the child as the body count rises to protect this code. Surprisingly decent, with a high violence rate and some pretty darn good action sequences.
The characters are all believable as well. Being an action film, one can overlook all the plot holes and nonsensical moments to enjoy it for what it is. Bruce Willis is in fine form, as always. Worth seeing.
