Review of Menashe (2017) by Christopher H — 19 Mar 2018
Admittedly, I don't know a lot about the ultra-orthodox Hasidic Jewish community. My encounters with them have painted them in a really bad light, so I was skeptical about sitting down and watching a movie about them.
Color me fascinated and surprised. This film is why you shouldn't stereotype and judge each person individually. To understand 'Menashe' you have to comprehend the religion behind the film and the lead character, apply named Menashe.
He's going through a tough time, which is explained more than satisfactorily. In layman's terms, he's a loser, but the kind who we don't often get to see depicted and for that reason it's enjoyable.
I'm sure there are many who won't be interested just based on a religion being the central focus, but don't be fooled, this is a character study of a man in crisis. Well worth the 81-minute investment, it has a documentary feel that will resonate.
Final Score: 7.8/10.
