Review of Menace II Society (1993) by Damon Y — 30 Jun 2008
A masterpiece. The same cultural authenticity of Boyz N Tha Hood, without the schmaltz. It's really like Greek tragedy in South Central, where Kane's fate has already been decided from the moment he's born.
And, as entertaining as Larenz Tate is as a complete psychopath, Jada Pinkett's character is the heart and soul of this film - the frustrated hope and broken promises that fill so much of the hood.
Plus a kick-ass soundtrack and great cameos like Samuel L. Jackson and Charles Dutton. In some ways, I think, compared to their contemporaries, the Hughes Brothers were too hardcore for America. But I love this film all the same.
