Review of Menace II Society (1993) by Tommy M — 16 May 2010
A firm example of a film that was not made for the weak at heart. The gritty realism of the environment certainly gives the story a clear feeling of authenticity.
The essence of creating a hopeless tragedy is very admirable for their debut film, but what prevents 'Menace II Society' from being a really solid effort is the lack of sympathy it creates along the way. At first we believe Caine wants to be set free, but by the time it reaches the third act, it's almost like he knows he'll never escape the hood, and he doesn't care.
