Review of Men, Women & Children (2014) by Ian G — 08 Feb 2015
Jason Reitman defintely seems to be in a funk these days, after successive hits in Thank you for Smoking, and Up in the Air, coming up with ridiculous or pretentious titles in Labour Day and no Men Women and Children, which would in some ways feel as a [part of fellow canuck Atom Egoyans filmography of late, focusing on technology and social media and how they affect culture in the here and now.
Using the after school special tropes of depression, divorce, isolation, and self image and how they apply to the new social media dynamic in the new high school dynamic, everything really comes across as just a boring tutorial with a couple of the Reitman regulars JK Simmons, Jennifer Garner and newcomer of all people being Adam Sandler trying to up the pedigree to minimal affect as the concerning parents dealing with the aftermath of their kids mistakes and such.
Hopefully for Reitmans next project he will come up with something a little less 90's Canadiana and soemthing thats more accessible.
