Review of Men of Honor (2000) by Tom T — 29 Dec 2010
A good and inspiring story based on true events. Men Of Honor sees Cuba Gooding Jr play a small town farm boy who is sent off to fight for his country and is soon promoted from being a low down chef, to being a rescue diver.
However he is the first and only black person in the diving section, and is instantly outcast by the other white divers due to the racism at that time. But his determination, hard work, and courage earns the respect and approval of his fellow divers and officers.
He then goes on to become one of the best divers in the US Navy, until his left leg is shattered after an accident. It is then with the help of De Niro's character that he then goes on to regain his position.
With great performances from both Gooding Jr and De Niro, Men Of Honor is a good and somewhat underrated film. However the film does lack that spark and missing ingredient that's probably the reason why a lot of critics gave it rotten.
This is an inspiring underdog story to say the least, that shows if you want something so so bad, if you work at it, you'll get it in the end.
