Review of Men in Black II (2002) by Thomas W — 20 Jan 2012
When Men in Black first came to the theaters, I was blown away - such a novel concept, taking the ubiquitous secret agents of UFO lore and turning them into the only real defense earth has against planetary invaders. The story was fresh, the characters memorable, and the pacing exceptional for a sci-fi flick of its type. Basically, it was innovative and fun.
Then, along comes Men in Black II, and we are handed a crappy script which masterfully does away with all of the slick premise set up by the first film. Then they added some hastily assembled special-effects and REALLY bad alien designs. Mix with some horrible Will Smith one-liners (which he appeared noticibly tense while reciting) and you have one of the worst sequels in film history.
