Review of Men in Black II (2002) by Harrison M — 21 May 2012
During Summer Movie Season 2002, the big Fourth of July event movie was Men in Black 2, I went to see it in a sold out crowd at one of my favorite multiplexes, the Megaplex 17 at Jordan Commons in Sandy, Utah.
It wasn't a terrible experience, just an underwhelming one. None of the previous film's charm or wit felt present at any point in Men in Black 2, even the chemistry between Jones and Smith felt off.
Lara Flynn Boyle was a weak villain and disappointing after the stellar opponent offered in the previous film, a giant cockroach dazzlingly performed by maniacal Vincent D'Onofrio. Johnny Knoxville played Boyle's comic henchman, an alien with two heads, and his act got old fast and I thought him obnoxious.
The only thing I liked about Men in Black 2 was the touching relationship between Smith and Rosario Dawson. Rosario Dawson played an other worldly princess that Smith falls for and lets go in order to save earth.
Their relationship was this film's emotional core and without it Men in Black 2 is totally worthless.
