Review of Men in Black 3 (2012) by Graham C — 08 Oct 2013
Men in Black is a sci-fi classic. It was fun, witty and original. Men in Black 2, it's poorly received sequel, is remembered (or more so unremembered) as dull, bland and forgettable. But Men in Black 3.... Well, it falls somewhere in between.
Right off the bat we notice the film obviously didn't have a huge budget. The special effects are weak, and it noticeably shows. Some parts do look good, but others strikingly bad. The villain, a large, spiky brute named Boris The Animal, is viciously played by Jemaine Clement. He's definitely the standout of the film, next to Brolin's younger interpretation of Tommy Lee Jones' Agent K. Will Smith returns as Agent J, yet gives the weakest performance of the bunch. He isn't given a lot to do, mainly just strutting around commenting on his racial issues in the 1960's and blasting a few aliens here and there.
Though, it's definitely a fun time. The plot holes are numerous, but it's no surprise having to deal with the complications of time travel. The film never comes close to the firsts success, but it ultimately succeeds as a sci-fi comedy that doesn't take itself too seriously.
