Review of Men in Black (1997) by Thomas W — 27 May 2018
For sure the best movie in the MIB franchise, and I personally believe somewhat of a modern classic. Don't get me wrong, many more important movies have been made since MIB but this is such a funny movie that should not be missed.
MIB helped show off Will Smith's comedic acting abilities to a wide range audience who had perhaps not seen The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. (A great sitcom staring Smith) And let's just face it, as much as we all liked Independence Day, which came the year before MIB, it didn't really fully showcase Smith's abilities.
But MIB, despite a silly plot, has a lot of witty and clever humor. MIB has a sharp script, but the best part has to be the way Smith as agent J, and Tommy Lee Jones as agent K play off each other. They're complete opposites.
Jones never cracks a smile, while Smith is the energetic youthful guy. It makes for a lot of funny moments to say the least. We see a lot of aliens as well which is a lot of fun. The first half of the movie is where most of the funny scenes happen, the second half isn't quite as good as they try to wrap up the story.
Probably the only minor flaw because this really is a great sic-fi comedy. If you haven't seen it, you're definitely missing out. It's also worth noting that Will Smith came out with a song to go along with the movie, also called Men in Black that won a Grammy.
Really does show Smith's versatility and how popular he was at the time. Definitely recommend this.
