Review of Men in Black (1934) by Christopher A — 24 May 2012
Men in Black is a mixture of science-fiction, action, and comedy. It is also among Will Smith's biggest movies. He also starred in fellow sci-fi movie Independence Day. But alongside him is Tommy Lee Jones. These two actors make a good buddy movie.
The movie starts out with introducing us to Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones), who is a high ranking member of the Men in Black (MiB), a secret organization that controls the alien population on Earth. The aliens that live out in the world are disguised as humans and the MiB takes great lengths to keep the public from knowing of their existence by using a device called neuralyzer to keep them from remembering any alien encounters.
After K's partner retires and has memory of the MiB erased, Agent K goes out searching for a new partner. His next partner is detective James Darrell Edwards III (Will Smith). His identity is erased and he becomes known as Agent J. But when their planet is being threatened by a rouge Bug alien that is searching for a Galaxy contained within a small object to use it to defeat the opposing aliens. With a little help from Dr. Laurel Weaver (Linda Fiorentino), they must stop the alien from finding the Galaxy.
As I've said before, this is a good buddy movie. The story is exciting and it also has excitement. The action scenes in the movie are well done. The special effects are also pretty good for their time. But there is also plenty of comedy, usually between the more easygoing Agent J and the more serious Agent K. Even some of the aliens have a sense of humor.
The acting is also good. The chemistry between Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are easily the highlight of this movie. Their differences also make them a perfect team. Vincent D'Onofrio makes a good villain as the human disguised alien Edgar. Rip Torn does a decent job as Chief Z, the boss of the MiB. The dog in the movie I also liked in his cameo. But Linda Fiorentino wasn't all that interesting as a character.
If you want a sci-fi buddy movie, Men in Black is a sure bet.
