Review of Men in Black (1934) by Brian F — 18 Feb 2015
Men In Black is a sci-fi action comedy that follows two agents of the MIB: A secret non-government agency that polices and monitors extraterrestrial activity on Earth. The movie was based on the comic series of the same name, created by Lowell Cunningham.
I had never read the comics prior to seeing the movie, but I absolutely loved it as a stand-alone piece of art. I did some research and found out that the film differs greatly from the comics, especially in tone.
The comics were darker and a bit more serious. It seems they toned the film down a bit, most-likely to attract a larger audience and sell toys based off the film to kids. The cast is made up of some pretty big and well-known actors.
Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith are great together as the main protagonists: Agent K and Agent J. Vincent D'Onofrio makes a creepy but also funny villian as Edgar/The Bug. Rip Torn also has his moments as Zed, the leader of MIB.
The score by Danny Elfman is a great and memorable score. It really sets the mood for the movie. The special effects are great, with decent CGI and some great alien makeup effects. If you a are fan of sci-fi, action, and comedy, and you like aliens, then this is a great choice.
Definitely recommended.
