Review of Memories of Murder (2003) by S. G — 25 Jul 2006
Stunning. Stunning visuals, stunning acting. I will say it again, although at this point I might sound like a broken record, Korea is the place where the best movies of the last 3-4 years came from. The story will remind you of Seven at first, but nothing will really prepare you for the emotional journey you will embark on when watching this movie. You will be thrilled, shocked, amused, moved, and you will ask yourself questions long after the credits will have rolled.
Kang-Ho Song as the rural detective who can read into people's eyes, see if they are guilty or not guilty and then beat a confession out of them is simply priceless. He truly is one of the best actors of the moment, as his performances in Joint Security Area, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and Memories of Murder undoubtedly show.
Sang-Kyung Kim as the Seoul detective who has come to shed light on the matter and undergoes a 180 degree transformation is amazing, and Roe-Ha Kim(A Bittersweet Life's Mun-Suk) plays the bully to perfection.
The sound score is perfect... haunting and penetrating. You will not be left indifferent to this film and it is a must see for everybody who has an appreciation for thrillers in particular and good cinema in general.
