Review of Memories of Murder (2003) by Patrick E — 28 Aug 2009
Came for the Song Kang-ho (aka: South Korea's Best Fucking Actor, Pretty Much) who you may remember from The Host, JSA, Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, & The Good The Bad The Weird...& stayed for the WTF.
At first I thought this was more along the lines of a black comedy judging from the bumbling display of detectivery, but when I read it was based on a true story (sorta like South Korea's 'Zodiac' killer, cept without all the cryptic mediawhoring & also something else...oh! It was South Korea's first serial murderer!) I broke out the Michael Jackson popcorn gif coz I just knew it was gonna deliver the goods & it did: I found myself disgusted by not only the case itself, but how the detectives were handling it, and yet also intrigued by the myriad of characters that came into play.
I must say that the whistling lady going through the field 'alone' only to hear whistling back was particularly chilling; especially the part where the audience sees the killer pop his head out of the field as she's unbeknowingly turned her back on him, as well as the last intense shot where the killer rushes her from the field's bank *bites nails*.
