Review of Memories of Murder (2003) by Paul P — 21 May 2010
'Memories of Murder' is a film that is disturbing, darkly funny, thrilling, exhausting and haunting all in one. A simple way of looking at the film is calling it a serial killer movie. But director Joon-ho Bong is more interested in the personalities of the men hired to find him and the effects that ruthless dictatorship has on them and the people around them.
There is one magnificent long shot of the detectives arriving to the scene of a crime that gets worse by the second and it's practically a breakdown for the entire film. the two police detectives with polar opposite styles clashing all while accomplishing nothing in there constant back and forth is brilliantly pulled off.
The performance by Kang-ho Song is outstanding! A complex film that will stay with you long after it's over.
