Review of Memories of Murder (2003) by Mattias E — 15 Aug 2010
After the quirky and tentative debut Barking Dogs Never Bite, Bong Joon-ho came out as a full-fledged master director in 2003 with the gripping thriller Memories Of Murder, in which ambience and historical detail become more important than genre elements and meeting the viewer's expectations, and most likely providing inspiration for David Fincher's Zodiac years later.
Bong brilliantly captures the fear, not only originating from the threat of a lurking serial killer, but also from living under the boot of a totalitarian government, blindly striking down upon dissidents.
Bong also fills the gaps with his trademark oddball humour, in a brilliant deadpan delivery by Song Kang-ho.
