Review of Memories of Murder (2003) by Aidan H — 18 Aug 2010
Like its equally-admirable cousin, The Chaser, MoM is a intelligently plotted crime thriller with an equally merciless serial killer and a flawed but dogged police force trying to keep up. Here, there are moments of humour provided by the two country cops but the mood is generally sombre until new blood in the form of a Seoul city cop shows up to help with the investigation.
It is this dynamic that carries the film: the corrupt and brutal elements in each cop and the desire for justice and redemption that drives them insane;the performances are uniformly excellent. It's pace is carried along by fluid but unobtrusive camera moves and a general sense of foreboding is created within mostly rural locations.
Not as terrifying as The Chaser but another worthy example of Korean thriller film making..
