Review of Memories of Murder (2003) by M.s. S — 12 Jun 2011
A gorgeous; unsettling masterpiece. MEMORIES OF MURDER is one of the best serial killer films ever made. It's an odd mix of comedy and suspense but it works. The script is razor sharp. It has us biting our nails and completely glued to our seats.
The film centers around a murder investigation and two cops who differ in their approach. The older one thinks using his legs and fists is the best way to investigate while the younger one takes the more clinical; intellectual approach.
There is constant tension between the two because of their differences which is quite compelling. Soon they realize that their goal is the same: to catch the killer and they have to work together. MEMORIES OF MURDER deals with a murder investigation but it's also about police abuse.
Several suspects were mistreated. The film asks us: When is it going too far? What I also found interesting is the kind of suspects that were brought in. The film gives us a glimpse at what society thinks about when they picture a serial killer.
All the suspects were oddballs and had characteristics that made them stand out among the rest. Ultimately; we find out that the killer was just a normal guy who blended in with society. Beautifully photographed; acted; filmed - MEMORIES OF MURDER is a breath of fresh air into a dying genre.
