Review of Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992) by Luc L — 09 Aug 2012
This is one of the few forgotten Carpenter movies. But this is actually a very good, underrated movie. It is certainly oddly mixed with fantasy, elements of a thriller and some light comedy. Chevy Chase in one of his best parts, almost in a serious leading role. Daryl Hannah is charming as Chase's girlfriend. But it is Sam Neill steals the show as a corrupted C.I.A. agent, who wants to use Chase for personal reasons, one of these things is a Spy for one thing!
The Script can be incoherent at times but Carpenter keeps things moving. There is some memorable early CGI work by Industrial Light and Magic. There is some real good scenes here including a bizarre dream sequence with Chase. More of a Studio movie than Carpenter's work. But the movie still capture some of his style. It was originally written to be a much more goofier fantasy comedy but Chase take the risk by making his role serious instead. Which I do think, it's works. But sadly, the audiences at that time didn't. I think, this is his best performance as a actor.
One of Carpenter's most underrated movies. It might not have "John Carpenter's Memoirs of an Invisible Man". Since he was a director to hire for this movie but still, it is worth seeing. One of the better forgotten movies of the 1990's.
