Review of Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) by Robert A — 16 Oct 2017
I think this is a seriously underrated movie, especially coming out of Hollywood. It features an Asian cast, but it's not yet another martial arts/sword fighting movie, nor is it another 'token white guy saves the locals' film.
There's no whitewashing, and the only white people come in when the Americans actually enter after defeating Japan in WW2. Personally I think that most American audiences just didn't like it because they couldn't relate themselves to the main character and it wasn't an action film.
The only time the majority of American audiences will willingly sit and watch a movie with an all Asian cast is if they're doing martial arts/swordfighting through most of the film.
