Memoirs of a Geisha is a solid movie done well with a few very large and annoying flaws. The Oscar wins are merited, for the film is abundant in beautiful choreography, artistry and scenery making it all believable.
Ziyi Zhang was robbed of an Oscar nomination, but this may have been a result of one of the major flaws of the film. With good acting, cinematography and a stunning score, there is little left to critique.
However, it is the English speaking that ruins this period piece. Refusing to completely authenticate the film with Japanese language throughout with subtitles, was a terrible movie in regards to being considered a serious movie and a masterpiece.
As a result, it is seen as Hollywood trash attempting to reach out to the masses, mainly because of the English language, and the predictable happy ending. An alternative ending, which was as possible would have made the ending brilliant, and consequently increased the recognition of the film in more serious and intelligent circles.
Other than the obvious, appeasing the masses for the $$$ rather than the true artistic and genius side, this movie maintains soul, greatly helped by the lead actress Ziyi Zhang.
