Review of Memento (2000) by William J — 09 Feb 2013
Christopher Nolan is one of my favourite directors for a reason: he's ridiculously smart and tells gripping, character-driven films with a real flair for the unexpected. If you're a doubter and not a big blockbuster fan, then he proves, with Memento, that he can do it just as well as he can with The Dark Knight with a little indie film.
Memento's narrative structure is unusual and jarring at first, but lends to such a rewarding pay-off in the end. Guy Pearce and Joe Pantoliano are great, but it is definitely the story - and the inimitable Mr. Nolan - who's the star of the show. Though I love his big blockbuster fare, I'd love to see Nolan tackle something smaller like this again in the future.
