Review of Memento (2000) by Levi B — 10 May 2013
This is a movie unlike any other. It is a detective story that plays with time starting from the ending, working its way to the beginning, while at the same time, moving FORWARD in time to get back to the ending. Memento is craftily written and directed by Christopher Nolan. Each scene seems to unveil another surprise helping you solve the crime of Leonard's wife and also helps you figure out who Leonard really is. The movie plays back so many times that you forget that this is all happening in the span of one day.
This movie impressed me from the first day I saw it. It is one of those mind-benders that real you in every time. You can watch it from many different perspectives: The man who is determined to avenge his wife no matter the cost, a heartbroken man missing his wife, trying to remind himself to forget her, the man who is being taken advantage of by everyone he encounters, the badass who killed a known drug dealer and is riding around in his clothes and his car with tons of money in the trunk. When you watch the movie from that angle then you start to pay attention to the other characters and what they may or may not know. Another perspective is watching Leonard as an assassin. This was the feeling I got from the last time I saw it. He is being used to kill people and score money and drugs.
This film made me a long time fan of Guy Pierce and justified Nolan as one of the top Directors in Hollywood.
5/5.
