Memento directed by Christopher Nolan is a neo-noir psychological thriller where the protagonist- played by Guy Pearce- suffers from anterograde amnesia after the incident during the murder of his wife.

The film plays out backwards as the we see the final act as the film begins. The way this is shot is not just a gimmick; it excellently portrays the mindset of the lead character who suffers from this condition. As such we only ever know what he knows and scenes often feel like they are disparate in time with seemingly no connection to what we have just seen. The secondary timeline- shot in black and white- provides a further level of confusion till the two timelines meet in a satisfying- if melancholic- ending.

One slight issue is that I did not feel much of an emotional connection with Guy Pearce's character but because of the nature of the story arc, this might well be inevitable. With the use of a unreliable narrator, there are plenty of twists for the viewer and is certainly one of the very best in the psychological thriller genre.
