Review of Melvin and Howard (1980) by Eric R — 08 Mar 2011
Melvin and Howard is based on the real story about the milk man Melvin Dummar who while driving one night in the middle of the desert in Nevada finds and offers a ride to a dirty old bumb (Jason Robards), who claims to be the multi billionaire aviator Howard Hughes. After dropping the bumb in Vegas, Melvin return to his everyday life and home town to his wife Lynda (Mary Steenburgen) and their daugther. From then we follows Melvin's hard-luck turbulent life, where he's trowing away and winning money, and his wife leaves every time he fails, and come back every time he succeed. But one day when he least expect it, he inherits $156 million from Howard Hughes. But is all end up in many trials because of a potential liar.
Melvin and Howard is not a bad movie, but I really indead wish there where more Jason Robards, that would really made this movie, he only have a 10-15 minutes long appearance on the screen. Besides Robards, Mary Steenburgen does a good preformance as the adorable and cardefull Lynda Dummar, a role that was really worth the oscar.
My conclusion: Less Le Mat. More Robards!
